AAPI Youth - Asian Hate During the Pandemic
Date
April 2023
These posters were made in my Theory and Practice in Graphic Design class in collaboration with the communication students in COM 345- New Media & Health Communication. Both comm and design students worked in groups ( 2 comm students and 2 design students). Through the comm students' analytical research and the design of students' visual manifestos, this project was intended to improve cultural sensitivities to the topics and reduce prejudice towards discriminated groups. The comm student research was presented in writings, infographics, and interview presentations. The design students suggested the design formats based on their creative capabilities and the given message.
My partner and I were assigned to comm students looking into COVID-19's impact on the mental health of AAPI youth. After much consideration, we decided to make a set of posters and a motion graphic addressing the subject. My partner created the motion graphics, but I oversaw the posters. The three posters follow a similar format: a blue background with a call to action and illustration of an AAPI youth as the focus, with quotes and statistics from the research on either side. The comm students we worked with were very lenient with how we designed the posters and gave us a lot of freedom in the design process. They only asked that the major points from their research be included, which we obliged.
In addition to the group project, we were tasked with creating individual pieces to respond to our topic. I decided to make a small zine inspired by Asian comic books. Each page has panels depicting AAPI youths in distress. The back cover also features quotes and facts from the comm student research.
For this project, I experimented with multiple illustrative art styles. The designs are all original and wholly my creations, both in the group and individual projects.
